Wood in bulk (logs). Sawn timbers or any timber wood in bulk	Where the product is transported (or stored) loose in bulk, the load must be considered as a whole and the samples must be taken from all parts of the load. Whole piece(s) or cuts are taken as samples from one or more positions throughout the bulk consignment by random selection or systematically.
Pallet or parcel load	Whole piece(s) or cuts are taken as samples from different transport packages / pallets found at different positions in the transport vehicle or in the storage facility by random selection or systematically. The minimum number of pieces to be sampled is one. Where the articles are small (all dimensions up to 10 cm), ensure that the final sample consists of at least 3 pieces.
Individual articles	Depending on the quantity in the consignment, value, and the size of the article, the minimum number of pieces to be sampled is one. Where the articles are small (all dimensions up to 10 cm), ensure that the final sample consists of at least 3 pieces.

Handling of samples
General comments	Taking samples: Wood (logs) / timber wood in bulk: You must ensure that the goods being checked consist of a single consignment. If there are several consignments, they should be identified separately. An aggregate sample may be formed only from the same lot contained in the same consignment. If there is wood of different origin, suppliers, or is remarkably different within the consignment (different species or species groups), it should be identified and sampled separately. Using a hand or chain saw, cut approx. 5 cm to 10 cm of wood from length (parallel to the direction of the grain). The cross section (showing the tree rings) must be at least 9 cm² (3 cm x 3 cm), as this is needed for testing. If the wood has smaller cross-section the piece with largest possible surface area should be taken. Samples should be taken in one solid piece. Small flakes are unacceptable. Samples should be free from irregular grain or rotted areas and insect holes. Also areas such as nail/nail holes, stamps, labels or marking, saw or drill marks etc. must be avoided. Pallet or parcel load, individual articles: If the lot consists of pallet, or parcel load, or individual manufactured articles take a sufficient number of articles for the required testing (minimum one piece, optimally three or more pieces) at random or systematically. Packing the samples. If possible, place the sample in a plastic or paper bags.
Sampling form	Fill in the sampling form. One copy should be attached to the samples and one copy should be kept for the record.
Transport	Samples should be kept at room temperature in a dry place. They must be protected from exposure to conditions which may change their relevant properties such as sunlight or chemical substances (vapours).
